Newark Unveils Transformative "Don't Touch My Hair" Exhibit, Exploring Black Hair and Identity
October 15, 2024
Newark, NJ — October 14, 2024 — The Culture Parlor, helmed by filmmaker Ayana Morris, launched its first mobile art installation, Don't Touch My Hair, at Harriet Tubman Square as part of the Newark Arts Festival. The exhibit, an immersive journey into the complexities of Black hair, sparked conversation on identity, culture, and resilience.
"We're here to reclaim our narratives and celebrate Black identity through art," said Morris during the opening ceremony on October 11. "Our hair tells stories of strength, beauty, and survival."
Dignitaries including Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, and Rutgers University–Newark Chancellor Jeffrey Robinson attended the ceremony. Once inside the exhibit, attendees experienced seven thought-provoking visuals exploring themes such as bondage, resistance, and survival. For example, an image depicting a woman with straight, blow-dried hair illustrates the pressure of assimilation, while another highlights the role of braids in creating escape routes for enslaved people—a testament to resilience.
The exhibit features a salon installation with products from Mielle, ambient lighting, mirrors, and table displays encouraging reflection on Black hair’s cultural significance. Throughout the weekend, events like the Hair Gala invited attendees to display creative hairstyles and discuss themes in Black beauty. A Sunday brunch honored Black beauty icons Mikki Taylor, Misa Hylton, and Claire Sulmers.
Jessica Cruel of Allure, Shauna Kay, Barri Gibson, and others held panels on Black representation in media, adding depth to the weekend. "Black hair is a powerful statement of identity," remarked panelist Kela Walker. "Spaces like this make sure our voices are seen and heard."
Don't Touch My Hair remains open at Harriet Tubman Square through November 15, offering an impactful exploration of Black beauty, culture, and history.
